A Future Vaccine to Prevent Knowledge of Soul and Spirit

From The Fall of the Spirits of Darkness (Bristol: Rudolf Steiner Press, 1993; GA 177), p. 85.

October 7, 1917

p 85 – “The time will come – and it may not be far off – when quite different tendencies will come up at a congress like the one held in 1912 and people will say: It is pathological for people to even think in terms of spirit and soul. ‘Sound’ people will speak of nothing but the body. It will be considered a sign of illness for anyone to arrive at the idea of any such thing as a spirit or a soul. People who think like that will be considered to be sick and – you can be quite sure of it – a medicine will be found for this. . . . The soul will be made non-existent with the aid of a drug. Taking a ‘sound point of view,’ people will invent a vaccine to influence the organism as early as possible, preferably as soon as it is born, so that this human body never even gets the idea that there is a soul and spirit.

“. . . the heirs of modern materialism will look for the vaccine to make the body ‘healthy,’ that is, make its constitution such that this body no longer talks of such rubbish as soul and spirit, but takes a ‘sound’ view of the forces which live in engines and in chemistry and let planets and suns arise from nebulae in the cosmos. Materialistic physicians will be asked to drive the souls out of humanity.”

October 27, 1917

pp 199-200 – “. . . the spirits of darkness are now among us. . . .

“. . . I have told you that the spirits of darkness are going to inspire their human hosts, in whom they will be dwelling, to find a vaccine that will drive all inclination toward spirituality out of people’s souls when they are still very young, and this will happen in a roundabout way through the living body. Today, bodies are vaccinated against one thing and another; in future, children will be vaccinated with a substance which it will certainly be possible to produce, and this will make them immune, so that they do not develop foolish inclinations connected with spiritual life – ‘foolish’ here, or course, in the eyes of materialists.

“. . . a way will finally be found to vaccinate bodies so that these bodies will not allow the inclination toward spiritual ideas to develop and all their lives people will believe only in the physical world they perceive with the senses. Out of impulses which the medical profession gained from presumption  – oh, I beg your pardon, from the consumption [tuberculosis] they themselves suffered – people are now vaccinated against consumption, and in the same way they will be vaccinated against any inclination toward spirituality. This is merely to give you a particularly striking example of many things which will come in the near and more distant future in this field – the aim being to bring confusion into the impulses which want to stream down to earth after the victory of the [Michaelic] spirits of light [in 1879].”

Future Inoculation to Prevent Knowledge of Soul and Spirit

November 6, 1917

p 80 – “The spiritual forces that are inoculated into humanity, if I may use this phrase, during the course of the fifth post-Atlantean period will be stronger than certain people will wish and stronger than what public opinion expects.”

p 81 – “It is characteristic of this development that during this fifth post-Atlantean age certain conditions of power, certain strong capacities to be influential [following occult principles] must become concentrated in small groups of people who will have much power over other, larger masses.”

p 82 – “During the fifth post-Atlantean epoch the human being’s physical apparatus for thinking will become mature enough to comprehend fully certain elements connected with diseases, certain processes of healing and connections between natural processes and diseases. . . . Either it will be possible to put out information about these things in a way that leads to calamity for the world or it will be possible for them to be taught in a way that leads to welfare in the world.”

p 90 – “When things that ought to come later make their appearance as spiritual premature births by the means I have described – through criminal occult activity – when this happens those whose intentions toward humanity are not good, in other words those who are black or gray magicians, can gain possession of such secrets.

“Such things have indeed been going on behind the scenes of external events during the current decades. The purpose was, firstly, to present certain groups of people with the secret of how to dominate great masses, . . . .

“That was the first purpose. The other is something that will play a great part in the future, namely, to get those secrets into one’s clutches for the purpose of turning in a certain direction the circumstances that have to do with the processes of disease, and also of procreation.  . . . Certain circles in this materialistic age are striving to paralyze and make impossible all of humanity’s spiritual development through causing people by their very temperament and character to reject everything spiritual and regard it as nonsense.

“. . . A longing will arise for there to be a general opinion: Whatever is spiritual, whatever is of the spirit, is nonsense, is madness! Endeavors to achieve this will be (91) made by bringing out remedies to be administered by inoculation just as inoculations have been developed as a protection against diseases, only these inoculations will influence the human body in a way that will make it refuse to give a home to the spiritual inclinations of the soul. People will be inoculated against the inclination to entertain spiritual ideas. . . . inoculations will be tested that already in childhood will make people lose any urge for a spiritual life.”

Future Materialistic Education of Inoculated Automatons Opposed by Waldorf Education

July 3, 1921

p 82 – “In our age, in our highly praised civilization, it is chiefly Ahrimanic influences active in us. . . .”

pp 83-84 – “. . . in our time the Ahrimanic powers would like to make us thoroughly head-men; they would like to transform us completely into mere thinkers.

“For the human being in a healthy development, however, the other pole exists, the will pole, which always counteracts this so that when we die the will has grasped the thought. . . . You see, when we are born, we have gathered new will, but the thought separates itself and finds our head; the will takes hold of the rest of the body. While we live on the earth there is within us a continual interaction between will and thought. The will takes hold of the thought, and we must carry this fusing of will and thought through death. Ahriman would like to prevent this. He would like for the will to remain separate, for the thought alone to be particularly cultivated. We would lose our individuality if we were finally to arrive at the point toward which Ahriman strives. . . . We would arrive, in the moment of death, at an excessively, intensively cultivated thought. We human beings would be unable to hold this thought, and Ahriman could lay hold of it himself and integrate it into the rest of the world. This is, in fact, the destiny that threatens humanity if we persist in the present-day materialism; then Ahrimanic powers would become so strong that Ahriman could steal thoughts from the human being and incorporate them into the earth in their effectiveness, so that the earth, which actually ought to come to an end, would become consolidated. . . . Ahriman wants heaven and earth to remain [vs. passing away]. This can be accomplished only if the thoughts of human beings are stolen, if human beings are deindividualized.

“If Ahriman could continue to work as he has been able to especially since the year 1845, human brains would become more and more rigid, and human beings would live as though subject to compulsive thoughts, to materialized thoughts. . . . (84) This would show itself particularly in human beings being guided in their education in such a way that they would no longer have mobile thoughts; rather, when they reached a certain age, they would have completely fixed thoughts. Now ask yourself whether that is not already true to a great extent in our time! . . . Today we have an Ahrimanized science, Ahrimanized through and through.”

p 86 – “This must, of course, be counteracted, which can happen only if our concepts are again led to have a pictorial [vs. abstract] quality, . . . Otherwise humanity approaches the danger of losing itself. What actually ought to be individualized by the flowing of the will into the thoughts will become materialized, will be made into universal earth. . . . a great cemetery.”

p 87 – “. . . already today, without people knowing it, there are all kinds of underground societies that work toward things that lead in a direction . . . [of explaining]that Man (88) does not consist of both body and soul but rather that Man consists only of the body and that the soul is merely something that develops out of the body.  It is therefore impossible, if you take this viewpoint, to educate Man from the aspect of soul; one must find a substance, a material substance, that can be inoculated into a human being at a certain age; then he will develop his talents by inoculation. This tendency definitely exists. It is right in line with the Ahrimanic development: no longer establish schools in order to teach, but inject certain substances instead. . . . It is indeed possible, but the human being is made thereby into an automaton. . . . There are already such substances that can be developed, substances that if injected at seven years of age, for example, could make the public schools altogether expendable; the human being would then become a thought automaton. He would become exceptionally clever but would not have a consciousness of it. The cleverness would just run off like a machine. . . .After all, what could be more tempting than the attitude, such as today is spreading far and wide, which would prefer to find an injectible substance to struggling with the children for years and years? . . . . By such an injectible substance, one would simply achieve a loosening of the etheric body in the physical body. (89) As soon as the etheric body is loosened, the play between the etheric body and the universe would become exceedingly lively, and Man would become an automaton. The physical body here on earth must be developed through spiritual will.

“Out of the full consciousness that one faces when confronting the automization of the human being, . . . the pedagogical methods for the Waldorf school, were discovered. In this regard they should be motors of civilization that will lead again to a spiritualization.”

p 90 – “. . . Already today it must be said that . . . we must work toward the mobility of thoughts. If there is such a working toward the mobility of thoughts, then these thoughts will not harden, and Ahriman will be in a difficult position. . . . It is necessary to work toward a pictorial quality of concepts; . . .”

p 91 – “. . . what is necessary is that we once again extend the one-sided head-civilization to a civilization of the entire human being.”
